Patience isn't a virtue I've ever possessed so it was very considerate of Lottie to have her puppies 3 days early. Statistically it should be a 50/50 chocolate/black litter and of the nine puppies there are 4 black dogs, 4 chocolate dogs and 1 chocolate bitch, so as close as it's possible to be.
A very tired Lottie with her puppies.
Snuggling up with mum.

Group photo.
How cute is this little guy.
23 Nov 2013
A box full of puppies, safely tucked away while I clean the whelping box. You'll be surprised how quickly they grow too big to all fit in there.
Lottie and puppies settling down for the night.
24 Nov 2013
Brothers make such good pillows.
Such a kissable little nose.
A rose between two thorns.
Fast asleep, not a care in the world.
I don't know what it is about the rails, but the puppies from every litter have loved sleeping under them and this little guy's no exception
Another boy who likes the rails.
25 Nov 2013
Just chillin'
Lottie looks far from impressed with having her photo taken.
26 Nov 2013
There's nothing better than a box of chocolates.
Unless it's a box of blacks.
27 Nov 2013
Look how much they've grown in less than a week.
28 Nov 2013
Where has the last week gone? Today the puppies have been weighed and had their nails trimmed. I use an electric nail grinder which gives a quicker, smoother result than clippers at this stage. It's important to keep the nails short, so they don't cause Lottie any damage when the puppies are feeding from her.The puppies were NOT impressed and there was a lot of noise. I shut Lottie in the kitchen while I was doing it and interestingly she was most unconcerned, it was Martha who kicked up a fuss about me torturing the poor puppies.
I've had to get a bigger box to put the puppies in while I clean out the whelping box. This photos was taken before I trimmed their nails.
Hiding in the corner after the trauma of the nail grinder.

The first VIDEO of the puppies, taken in the early hours of the morning so not the best quality.
30 Nov 2013
Five of the boys having a snuggle.
"You've got that blinkin' camera out again, Mum".
Two little shiny heads.
01 Dec 2013
This little tummy's just asking for a tickle.
02 Dec 2013
As I lifted the puppies out to weigh them this evening one of them had the corner of one of his eyes open. It's a lovely time, when I look at a puppy and see a pair of eyes looking back at me and in the next few days I expect all the puppies' eyes to open.
The same little guy on his back again.
04 Dec 2013
The puppies' eyes are starting to open so I'm avoiding using the flash on the camera, as well as keeping the blinds down to block out the bright sunlight. This short VIDEO was taken today and shows some of the puppies getting up on their feet instead of the 'commando crawl' they've been doing up to now.
I took a quick photo of Lottie with the pups while they were asleep. Quite a set of little puddings, aren't they.
06 DEC 2013
Snoozing.
Mid morning snack. They're all on there somewhere, though I think one of them is well hidden underneath.
07 Dec 2013
Bedtime.
08 Dec 2013
Grandsons Owen and Luca couldn't resist having puppy cuddles when they called in today.
Three of the boys snuggling up together.
09 Dec 2013
Clean bedding, clean collars. The puppies' collars had been getting a little 'snug' so I've changed them over to the second size ones. They won't stay looking so pristine for long.
A short VIDEO showing the puppies walking.
10 Dec 2013
Following the example of puppies from previous litters, the only girl and one of the boys fall asleep on the rails.
11 Dec 3013
The puppies are quite active when they're awake and are starting to play with each other. They've found their voices and it's amusing to hear all the little growls and barks. They're also started to respond to my call of "Puppies!" and it's lovely to see them move over to me when I call. This is a short VIDEO of them moving around, waiting for Lottie to go in and give them their supper.
12 Dec 2013
No, it's not a trick of the light, this girl suckling the pups really is black. I keep the gate to the pen closed during the day when the other dogs are around, but at night I leave it open and let Poppy stay in the room with Lottie. Shortly after midnight I looked at the baby monitor and realised Poppy was in with the pups.
First food. They didn't need any encouragement to get tucked in.
All very neatly divided, the blacks in one group and the chocolates in the other.
Leader of the escape committee.
Look where this little guy managed to escape to. I've now increased the height of the opening, otherwise I could be coming down in the morning to puppies everywhere.
13 Dec 2013
Having a snooze after checking out the new bedding.
14 Dec 2013
Turn up the volume as you watch this VIDEO and you'll hear just how noisy these puppies can be a times. They're getting to the size where they can just about reach to feed off Lottie when she's standing up.
15 Dec 2013
"She looks like Mum but there's no milk bar, it must be Auntie Annie"
"Auntie Martha's coming in too, who do we play with first?"
Supper time!

Crashed out after tea.

"We've had a busy day and all we want to do now is sleep".
19 Dec 2013
Having a mid afternoon snack of goats milk.
Two brothers having a snuggle.
20 Dec 2013
Grandaughter Isla watching the puppies. In the foreground you can see Lottie and one of the puppies. This boy is a regular escapee and although he's the smallest pup, he's certainly very agile.
Isla and the little guy with the red spotty collar look to be having an interesting conversation.
Another boy with a lot to say for himself.
21 Dec 2013
"We're too tired to eat our tea, we've had such a busy day. Wake us up when it's supper time"
22 Dec 2013
Having a snooze before the next visitors arrive.
Standing room only at the milk bar.

Breeding isn't for the faint hearted, it's a mixture of highs and lows. There are so many highs, picking up a puppy and seeing a pair of little eyes peeping back at you for the first time, watching them start to get up on their feet and eventually run around. The delight when you call "Puppies" and even when they're fast asleep they jump to attention and rush over. Seeing them go to their new homes and develop into fully grown dogs, the list is endless. The lows? Well the lows are the absolute pits, they're the days when you feel your heart will break with the pain. Today has been one of those days.
On Friday I took the little black pup with the grey collar to the vets. He was giving me cause for concern and although the vet couldn't find anything obvious wrong with him, he didn't pick up over the weekend so today I took him back for further investigations. His condition was such that I had to make the decision not to have him woken up from the anaesthetic. He was such a little character, the only puppy to be able to get in and out of the whelping box, doing it constantly throughout the day.
This afternoon I fetched him home and he's now buried in the garden with the other puppies I have loved and lost. RIP little man x

It looks as though it's bedtime, judging by the little guy yawning.
It's a hard life.
25 Dec 2013 Merry Christmas everyone!
They've got all the whelping box to sleep in but seem to prefer this area now they've got access to it.
Ned and Annie getting 'up close and personal' with the puppies.
Christmas dinner!
26 Dec 2013
It's all change as the puppies move through into the dining room. The whelping box has been replaced with a dog bed, though they seem to prefer the floor when they need a snooze.
27 Dec 2013
Toys? Ha! Tearing up newspaper is far more fun.
28 Dec 2013
Snoozing after breakfast, in the small pen, while I clean out the main one.
Just chillin'
Sister and brother snoozing together.
29 Dec 2013
Fun and games when the other dogs go in the pen with the puppies. This FIRST VIDEO is of Annie in with the puppies. The SECOND VIDEO shows Ned in as well, he's totally unconcerned as the puppies bounce round him. In the THIRD VIDEO Ned's still in the pen with Gertie leaning over into it.
31 Dec 2013
The chocolate guy at the back looks very serious, he obviously missed the joke the black guy at the front's laughing at.
"We want to come OUT!"
01 Jan 2014 Happy New Year!
I decided to let the puppies loose in the kitchen while I cleaned the pen out this afternoon. WATCH them chasing up and down.
Back in the pen, how cute is this little guy (he's the one with the green spotty collar) with his legs crossed.
02 Jan 2014
"Psst Ned, want to know a secret?"
"Hmm, no milk bar here, it must be Auntie Annie".
04 Jan 2014
Some close-ups of the puppies. Click on each photo to see a bigger version.
A couple of videos of the puppies. The FIRST one of them loose in the kitchen, eating their tea while I put fresh bedding in the pen. The SECOND video is of the puppies surrounding Ned in the corner of the pen.
The puppies have a got an exciting and busy time ahead of them. Tomorrow the first of the new families comes to choose which puppy will eventually be theirs. In the last 10 days of their time with me, the puppies be microchipped and be checked over by my vet.

Who needs a pillow when you've got a brother.
A pile of puppies.
06 Jan 2014
The puppies are hoping Luca's going to let them out of the pen.
07 Jan 2014
This VIDEO shows Gertie in with the pups, getting well and truly mugged. She's not quite as tolerant of their biting as Ned or Annie and there's a bit of baring of teeth as she warns them to stop. Watch the last few seconds of the video and you'll see her real reason for going in the pen, she likes to steal their toys!
08 Jan 2014
What do you call a group of puppies? Ask me first thing in the morning and my answer would have to be a 'A poo of puppies'. but looking at them here, tummies full and back in a clean pen I think you'll agree that it should be a 'snuggle'.
11 Jan 2014
It's been a busy couple of days. The puppies had upset tummies (exploding bums!) so yesterday they had their first car ride when I took them to the vets. They weren't too impressed with the car ride and even less impressed with what the vet did to them when we got there (well, would you want your temperature taken the way a vet takes it?) After 24 hrs of feeding them boiled chicken I'm gradually reintroducing the kibble, their appetites haven't waned in the slightest and they can polish off a bowl of food even faster when it contains chicken. I added a pro-biotic paste to their food and you can see remnants of their breakfast on their noses in the the following photos. In the first one you can get a glimpse of the older dogs, hoping there'll be some food left over. Dream on guys, there's not a chance!
12 Jan 2014
Totally chilled out now, but you wouldn't believe the noise they were making half an hour before this photo was taken.
14 Jan 2014
The title of these pictures should be 'I'm watching you, watching me, watching you'.
Fast asleep after all that posing for the camera.
15 Jan 2014
The puppies had their second car journey today when they went to the vet for their check-up prior to going to their new homes. We actually managed the journey there and back without any of them doing a poo - which is an absolute record for Davricanby litters!
All more relaxed now they're back in the car, ready to come home.
16 Jan 2014
"We're having to squash ourselves into the corner because 'somebody' made a mess of our pen"
17 Jan 2014
I wanted to get a photo of the puppies all together before they start to leave for their new homes. This was one of the better ones, which gives you some idea of how bad the 'out-takes' were!
The puppies are starting to leave for their new homes. Have a look at More of Lottie puppies 2013 to follow their progress.

This little madam has a lot to say for herself, but then that's only to be expected when she has so many brothers.
Young black George having a good nosy.
Chocolate George in the centre and Jasper to the right, with Rosie peeping through the bars. Jasper's sibling's chewed his plain green collar so he's now sporting a brown spotty one instead.
21 Jan 2014
Puppies, like children, are often far more interested in a box than its contents. The box in this VIDEO provided a lot of fun for the puppies.
25 Jan 2014
George looks to have a lot to say for himself and something's caught Rosie's attention.
From L to R chocolate George, black George, Jasper and Rosie.

And then there were two. Double trouble, Rosie and Jasper.
18 Feb 2014
The end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one as the last of the puppies have gone to their new homes today. Things haven't been straightforward with this litter. It's a been long, hard haul with them and there were times when it seemed the only light at the end of the tunnel was the headlights of the train coming towards me! However, no matter what's happened, I wouldn't have missed having these little people in my life for anything.
I'd like to say big thank you to all of the puppies' new owners for their patience and understanding.
